l bought a car from a man and when getting the title switched over it looks like someone scribbled over the date to put another date.l had to get an form to confirm the date change. The problem is that the man died and there is not a power of attorney or someone in the family that can sign. How can l get the title so that l can get me a permanent tag for this vehicle.l do not know how l can because this happened about a month ago and l just got around to it because l got the car running and when l bought it, it was not running and l did not know the title would not go through. Is there anything l can do?Someone said apply for an abandoned title but that will probably cost alot of money. What would be my best and cheapest bet? Thanks for the help.

In CA you can file what is called an abandoned pink with the DMV. They basically research it to see if it was stolen ( l think) and see if there is another claiming owner. After a period of time, you get title and tags. Check on DMV is site.

The only way to do it is to apply for a lost title with his name and your address, If its not reported stolen they will send a new title to you. Sign and date the title and turn it in. You will be done for around $8.00.

Go to a junkyard & remove the dashboard. Make sure that the car that u remove the dash from has a title. Get a salvage title from the junk yard. Other than the dash board, the title should not cost much more than someone filing for a lost title. Check ur state is laws to ensure to doing this will be okay because it is illegal in some states.

Before l did this though, l would talk to the DMV & see about filing for a lost title, once u receive the new title take it to the DMV & get it registered. If u know someone with a used car lot, they may be about to legally transfer the title into their name & then sign it back into ur name.

No applying for a lost title is not expensive. HOWEVER an altered title is void & if his family wanted to be real jerks ! they could take the car BACK & there would be nothing that u could do about it.UNLESS
u have a bill of sale ??? Please say YES!
Did the notary that u went to while signing the title not inform u of the problems with changing dates on a title to a automobile? it should have never been notarized? Did u go to the DMV to do this? ??? Or did u try mailing it in so it would come back in ur name??? In NC where we r it cannot be mailed it must go to a DMV location for notarization or to a notary with the bill of sale both parties , buyer & seller along with driver licenses for ID. from BOTH.

It basically depends on the state, that you did not say. Some states just require a death certificate naming the next of kin, and they can sign the title, other states require a surrogates certificate naming the executor/trix of the will. Someone, whether it is a family member or lawyer, will be able to apply for a duplicate title. Once they get the duplicate title, they can assign in over to you. Duplicate title fees vary from state to state from 5 to 30 dollars.

Ok, As l see It ur Sc***d. Unless a member of the dead guess family has a copy of the dead guess Drivers license so then they can file for a duplicate Title in his name & ur address (when filling out the duplicate.title form check the New Address Unfortunately the titles r plainly marked *any alteration or erasure voids this document. If this does not happen ur in a world of trouble. There r papers that can be gotten from the DMV that will take an awful long time & in some states a court appearance. l would try my best for the first option. A thought for you; no one at any dmv knows the title owner personally. so, who signs the application is of no concern.
