My brother in law has a VW Golf GTl and I am thinking of buying it. only problem is when he bought it the guy never gave him the title saying he lost it. Do l have to get the signature of my brother in law or do l have to get the signature of the guy before. If l need the signature of the guy before the only problem is that the guy lives in a different state. What do l do?
Its a 1994 Golf GTl and the previous owner is from South Carolina and l live in New York and l found a form to apply for a title but like l heard before l am afraid of loosing the car and then possibly having to go to court for something like stealing a car. I am just 16 l do not wanna get into any trouble now. lol

Tell your brother in law to do whatever it takes to get a title in his name. Then when he does that you will buy it.But do not do it until then. You will have all kinds of headaches if you buy it without a title, and you may end up with a car you may not even be able to register or if you can it will be at a considerable expense....ujn

Depends on the year of vehicle and state licensing laws. In Georgia (for example) you do not need a title if the Vehicle was manufactured before 1995. If your car and laws fall ouside of the ''No title needed'' category you will have an uphill battle. The previous owner (before your B.I.L.) will have to file for a lost title and he may actually (if crooked) be able to regain ownership of vehicle. Then the replacement title must be turned over to the new owner for state assignment.

You cannot legally buy a car without a title. A seller cannot legally sell a car without a title. Each owner is required by law to get a title in his name and when selling that vehicle is required to furnish a merchantable title to the new owner. Since that has not happened. l would stay at least a million miles away from this ''deal''. Buy it without a valid title and you are simply buying a whole lot of trouble for yourself.
