l was wondering, in America, when you sit a drivers test, what is involved?

Do you have a theory test and an in-car test like here in the UK?

Also, if you sit the test in an automatic car and pass, can you legally drive a manual car, or do you have to sit a test in a manual car to legally drive a manual car?

It is a written test and an in car test, yes.

And yes if you pass in an automatic car, you are able to drive a manual car.

u must pass a class for driving.

the class is ussually a week long for about 2 hours a day & at the end u take a 100-200 question test & must get an 80% or better to pass. u do driving with an instructor also. u then get a permit u must keep with no accidents for 3 months. u then go back to another class & pass that & get a secondary permit. once u r 16years old u can then take a drivers test or road test. if u pass the road test u can then get ur license.

and u dont need to pass a test for a manual. if u know how to drive one then u can.

In the USA, individual states grant a driving license. Each state is slightly different. You would need to find the state(s) DMV website.

In New York State, there is a written test on traffic signs to get the learner is permit, a mandatory five hour classroom lecture (no test but u must participate in the discussions) & a road test.

There r no ''tell me/show me questions.'' The examiner gives commands to start, stop, turn left, right, go straight, make a u-turn & park. The test is less than ten minutes & does not include any highway driving,

The road test is on a public road & the applicant supplies his or her own vehicle. It can be either manual or automatic transmission. New York State allows u to operate a manual transmission automobile without further credentials if u pass with an automatic.

However, anyone driving a manual transmission car would be accountable for his or her actions under the traffic law, criminal law, civil law as well as the court of public opinion (i.e. irritating other motorists if a non-proficient driver holds up traffic).

For that reason, many people take private lessons after their road test to operate a stick shift car.

There are 3 tests in most states: vision, theory and driving.

There is no distinction between automatic and manual licenses.
